This article will show you how to apply for a smart driving license in Kenya From NTSA following very simple steps. The new smart driving license looks exactly like a normal identity card. It is small thus making it easy to carry not like the red booklet which we used before.
Useful information about the new smart driving license
It will cost you 3,050 to acquire a smart driving license in Kenya. If you are a driver and you are still using the old booklet of driving license, just know from January 2021 you won’t be allowed to use it. The new driving license has a chip that will store your information. This information will include your blood group which will assist just in case you need some emergency medications. In case of any traffic offenses, the smart driving license will be updated to indicate your offense.

A new smart driving license will have 100 points if have never done any traffic offense. Just in case you do an offense, your points will start reducing according to the number of offenses and the level of offense. This means you need to be more careful with traffic acts and maintain good conduct otherwise you may lose the license. If the point reduces up to 40 points, you may be denied driving any vehicle for six months or forever.

Most insurance companies will also use this smart driving license to determine whether they can assure your car or not. As I said before, The card has an electronic chip that stores information. For those firms who are hiring drivers, they will also use the information stored in this smart driving license to determine whether to hire you as a driver or not. The word of the street is that NTSA is negotiating with Insurance company to offer best premium insurance to the best driver who have high point and vice-versa
For you to apply for this smart driving license you must have an account with Tims (Transport information management services)
How to create Tims account
- Go to tims account website ( tims.ntsa.go.ke)
- If you have an account you just need to sign in but if you don’t have check step number 3
- If you don’t have an account click the register button as shown below
After that, you will be required to fill in some information like your KRA pin, your full names, and your phone number. Make sure the information you have filled in is correct, Remember the system has your identity card details so if you give wrong information then you will receive an error notification. If the information is correct you will receive a code via your mobile phone referred to as a verification code. Fill this code and you are now registered in tims Account. What is now left is to apply for the smart DL.
Steps on How to apply for a smart driving license
Since now you have a tims account, you can now go back to tims.ntsa.go.ke and sign in now. On the left side, you will have an option to apply for the new smart driving license. Remember the system has all the information about your old driving license including the “class” and when you were issued by the license. Check the attached photo for more details.
after filling in all the information requested, you will be taken to a verification page where you will be required to verify whether the information about your driving class is correct. If all is well you can proceed to the next page where you will be required to pay for the service. There are several methods which you can use to pay including Mpesa, the choice is yours. After paying you will select a date to visit NTSA offices in your county. You will be required to print the booking letter and the receipt which you are supposed to provide when visiting NTSA offices. At NTSA offices, you will be requested for fingerprints and a photo will be taken. After the process, the driving license should be ready within a week.
